The term 'quickening' brings up many associations. Originally the old-fashioned term for what was believed to be “the moment when the soul enters a fetus” (when a mother first feels her baby move inside her belly) it has now come to refer to broader instances of life becoming more vital; one’s pulse quickens when one is excited, for instance. With trying to have another child still very much on my mind, I chose to create a piece that began with the original concept of quickening as a jumping-off point, but which I pushed to become more conceptually expansive in scope.
